Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics
Six Direct Expansion Ice Rinks for Olympic Glory
Challenge
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics required world-class ice surfaces for six different venues hosting figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey, and curling. The challenge was unprecedented: maintaining Olympic-grade ice quality across multiple facilities while adhering to strict environmental standards and operating within tight timelines.
Solution
Cool Ice Company represents the technology has been used in the design and implementation of six independent direct expansion systems, each tailored to the needs of specific sports. The systems provided precise temperature control (±0.5°C variation) across the entire ice surface, eliminating the need for traditional ammonia-based indirect systems. Real-time monitoring ensured consistent ice quality for elite athletes.

Temple of Moon Sport Center
Underground Ice Rink with Heat Recovery Innovation
Challenge
The Temple of Moon Sport Center required transforming underground space beneath a football field into an Olympic-standard ice rink. The challenge was maximizing energy efficiency in a confined underground location while meeting China's dual-carbon policy requirements and providing heat recovery for facility operations.
Solution
Cool Ice Company represents the technology that has been used to design a direct expansion ice-making system with advanced heat recovery technology. The system captures residual heat generated during ice production and redirects it for site anti-icing, ice melting coil thermal cycles, and providing 70°C hot water for the resurfacer. The compact design maximizes underground space utilization while minimizing energy consumption.

National Speed Skating Oval
The 'Ice Ribbon' - World's Largest CO2 Direct Cooling Ice Surface
Challenge
The National Speed Skating Oval required covering 12,000 square meters of ice with less than 0.5°C temperature variance—the most demanding ice surface specification in the world. Traditional systems couldn't achieve this level of uniformity at this scale. The facility also needed to be the most eco-friendly ice rink in Olympic history.
Solution
Cool Ice Company represents the company that has been used to design advanced CO2 transcritical direct cooling technology across the entire 12,000 m² surface. The system used direct expansion refrigerant delivery to maintain perfect temperature uniformity, eliminating the efficiency losses of indirect systems. Real-time monitoring across 200+ sensors ensured consistent conditions for world-record speed skating performances.
Unlimited Possibilities
Almost your imagination can be the limit to where or what kind of ice rink you want to build. In addition to sports, it can be outdoor leisure ice or even a skating rink inside a shopping center. Best of all, the ice rink can be dismantled and moved to a new location if necessary. Cool Ice also offers bubble halls together with Airhouse.
